Just Jack

Tonight, I got my very first dismissive, "That's cool and all, but..." from my five year old son.

And so it begins.

Just Jack

On our way home from school, I asked Jack what he learned about today.

"Mama, could you please not ask me that for a couple of days...because I'd like to have a relaxing time."

Well, alrighty then.

*****

After a long day (apparently), we were sitting at the dinner table eating when Jack announced the he was the "tired-est kid in town."

Just Jack

Tonight while I was making dinner, Jack and Hannah were playing by the stairs.  I overheard a tiny piece of their conversation, and it made me smile.

Jack, leaning over to talk to Hannah, asked her if she wanted to watch a show in "a few whiles."

Watching him learn time increments lately is pretty stinkin' cute.

Also, just the way he talks to his little sister sometimes?  It makes me swoon.

Just Jack

So the other night, Brad asked Jack whether Hannah was more like me or more like Daddy.  And I'm not kidding when I tell you that this is exactly what he said:

I think she's more like Mama because she's crazy like Hannah.

My jaw literally dropped.  I have no idea where this came from.

Brad thought it was the greatest thing in the world, and now Jack repeats it all the time.

Lovely.

*****

After spending such a good day together, we were lying in bed snuggling when Jack said to me, "I had such a good day today.  I'd rather spend the day with you, Mama."

Be still my little heart.  That's for sure.

Just Jack

While we were snuggling before bed, this is what Jack said:

I'm a tricky boy...tonight I'm gonna sneak up on you so you don't know I'm here and I'm gonna sleep in your bed...

*****

While eating dinner, he finished eating something that wasn't quite his favorite.  He said to me, "Mommy, my tummy's full, there's nothing I can do about it."

I guess he gave me a taste of my own medicine right then.

*****

When I asked him if his tummy hurt or if he needed to go potty, he replied, "I'll just take it easy."

*****

After making a mac and cheese sandwich (gross!), Jack announced, "I have good taste."  He'll eat a mac and cheese sandwich, but not a single vegetable.  He's killing me.

*****

When I asked Jack, "Why are you so smart?"

He replied, "That's just how God made me."

He's learning:)

Just Jack

While watching The Amazing Spider-man, I remarked, "She's so pretty," to watching Emma Stone on screen.  And Jack?

Without missing a beat, Jack replied, "She's hot, too."

*****

When I give the kids a bath in our master bathroom, I wear my swimsuit.  They've never asked any questions, until recently.

Jack asked me, "Are you going to wear your swim suit?"

"Yeah, is that okay?"

"That makes me laugh," Jack said.

"Why does that make you laugh?"

"Because you look so cute in your swimsuit, Mommy!"

*****

Before leaving for Christmas break, my little man wished one of his best friends a Merry Christmas.  He literally said, "Have a Merry Christmas, Lola!" without any prompting at all.  It was the cutest thing!

*****

Jack has remembered that I like to sleep while it's raining, so now whenever it rains, he likes to tell me about how much he also enjoys sleeping in the rain.  A-dorable!

My Little Man

A couple of weeks ago, my sister came over and we made spaghetti for dinner.  I usually put Hannah in one of Jack's old Spider-man t-shirts on spaghetti night because it's already red and keeps her from ruining her non-red clothes.  She happened to be barefoot and wearing her adorable skinny jeans that night, and I don't know what it was...but watching her walk around in her big brother's t-shirt with those skinny jeans - I just fell even more in love with her.  I really just could've eaten her up.

But as I was doting on her and trying to capture some photos, Jack announced, "I think it's more adorable with me in it."

Maybe he's a little jealous.  Sometimes.  Maybe.

*****

When he was done eating his spaghetti dinner (one meal he actually eats quickly and well), he set down his fork and said, "BAM."  Without missing a beat, he explained, "My dad taught me that."

I thought it sounded a little familiar:)

*****

One night, while we were snuggling before bed, I told Jack, "You're my baby," after kissing his adorable belly.  Do you know what that sweet boy said to me?

"That makes my heart happy."

Ditto, Little Man.  Ditto.

*****

While spending time collecting sticks with Great-Uncle Danny over Thanksgiving, Jack said, "I don't mean to upset you, Uncle Danny, but you just interrupted me."

Uncle Danny, caught a little off-guard, apologized to Jack and explained that he hadn't meant to interrupt, to which Jack replied, "It's okay.  I do it all the time."

*****

While climbing out of the car the other day, I noticed that Jack referred to himself in the third-person, but not just as Jack.  He referred to himself as Jack-a-Bear.  I had to think about it for a second, but then I asked, "You mean, like Hannah Bear?  So you're Jack-a-Bear?"

"Exactly," he told me.  "You're right, Mama!"

So creative, and so on-point.  I was very impressed, even though it does make me chuckle a bit:)

*****

As tiring as he can be...as talkative, as energetic, as particular, as sensitive, as stubborn as he can be...I couldn't possibly love this four and a half year old boy any more.  He has made my life better just by being in it, and I'm so lucky that I get to be his mommy.

Hot Dogs

Tonight we had a slightly scary, and then very funny episode at the dinner table.

I had made the kids hot dogs, and Jack was being a little overzealous.  He took a little too-large bite, and I could tell it got stuck for a moment before he coughed and was fine.

But he immediately said, "I just swallowed a whole piece down my tummy.  It hurt a little.  I almost died." {insert huge grin}

We had a little chat about appropriately-sized bites.  But at least he's learning to lay on the drama!

Proud Mama

I've started occasionally looking at wordless books with Jack so that he can practice telling a story by looking at the pictures.  Tonight, he was so excited that he was catching on while we read Breakfast for Jack.  He looked up at me with his big, blue eyes and said, "It doesn't have any words so we can talk whatever makes sense!"

My mommy/teacher-heart beamed.

That's right, my little man.  You're so smart!

It's only been a week...

We had the family room painted a few days before Hannah's first birthday party.

Today, Jack scanned the room and announced, "I'm starting to like the house while it's yellow now."

Good thing, Kid.  Good thing.

Just Jack

This post is long overdue.  Jack says adorable and equally hilarious things on a daily basis, and one of my goals is to get better about posting them as they happen, rather than waiting, writing them on tiny slips of paper, finding said slips of paper, and posting them all at once:)  And just in case you wanted to know, all of the photos in this post were taken on Jack's fourth birthday.

The scene: Jack was playing with blocks as Hannah was trying to eat them play with them.
Me: Jack, it's okay.  Don't get upset.  It'll make her happy to play with your blocks for a little while.
Jack: You know what makes me happy?  {Pause for effect.}  When Hannah doesn't take my stuff.

Jack referred to his "big 'ole giant head" one day when trying to put on his shirt.  I think he got that from his Daddy!

Last night Daddy asked him a question after dinner, and Jack responded, "For sure."  Seriously?  At four?

After choosing his own pajamas and getting himself dressed for bed, he came to me in his Superman pajama pants, Woody pajama shirt, and cookie monster socks, and asked, "Don't I look pretty in this?"  I guess I've asked him enough times when getting ready for work that the question stuck.  I decided to respond by saying, "You look so handsome, Buddy!"

Jack: Guess what we learned at school today?
Me: What did you learn?
Jack: We learned about hermicanes.
Daddy: I think you mean hurricanes.
Jack: No, actually, we learned about hermicanes.
(They were, indeed, studying weather this week.)

Jack made up his own contraction.  Amn't.  One day I told him not to do something, and he responded, "I amn't."  I wasn't sure I heard correctly or that he was listening to what I was saying, but when I repeated myself, I definitely heard him say, "I amn't."

We've talked about how amn't isn't a word, and he should say, "I'm not," but I think he likes his word better because he uses it all the time:)

One night when Daddy was telling him that there's no such thing as the word amn't, Jack just looked right back at him and poked him in the stomach.  We do this to Jack when he's being silly, and apparently he things Daddy was just being funny!

When talking to his baby sister, he tells her, "Hannah, when you get big, I'm gonna miss you when you're small."  It seems I'm not the only one who'd like to stop time occasionally.

When you ask Jack if it's okay for us to do something or to go somewhere, he often responds, "Of course we can!" or, "Of course."  I love it!

He's also very tied to "plans".  Sometimes before we get ready to do something, I'll list the things we have to do first.  For example, before we get ready for bed, we're going to put our toys away and take our things upstairs.  One night, Jack had a specific plan as to the kinds of toys he was going to bring with him to bed (he doesn't play with them, but he just collects things to take with him at nighttime), and he was nervous that I was going to forget his plan so he kept repeating, "Remember our plan?"

Our little man has Peter Pan syndrome.  He never wants to grow up; he says he wants to be small forever.  He seems to understand that Grammy and Grampy are my mom and dad, and they don't live with me.  And that Grandma and Grandpa are Daddy's mom and dad, and they don't live with him.  He asks us about it often.  I think he's smart enough to realize that one day he'll be our size and he won't live with us.  He was talking about it the other night at dinner, but I couldn't speak.  A lump forms in my throat and tears come to my eyes.  I had to look away and get up to do dishes so he wouldn't see how sad this thought makes me, but Daddy did great and answered all his questions.  He tried to explain that one day, a long day from now, Jack will be a big boy like him and have a family like we do.  I can't even type it without getting emotional...

Anyway, as his birthday was approaching, he would ask us if four is still small.  We told him that four is a little bit bigger than three, but that he has lots of time to still be small.  So when people asked him how old he was on his birthday, he would explain, "I was three awhile ago, but now I'm four.  But Mommy says I'm still small."

He was thrilled to get his big boy bike, though.  He kept saying, "This is so awesome!" and, "I'm a big boy now!" with the biggest grin on his little cheeks.

For awhile now, Brad has been telling Jack that he can see him through walls.  While Jack seemed a little skeptical, he's gone along with it, and just often asks, "Can you see me now?" when he's on the other side of a wall or door.  So the other night I was sitting on our bed while Jack was in the hallway in our bedroom and Brad was at his bathroom sink.

Jack calls out, "Can you see me on the other side of the wall?"

Daddy called back, "I can see you!"

Jack, who thought about it for a second, said, "What am I doing?"

And Daddy and I just had to laugh!  Brad came out of the bathroom, and said, "You got me, Jack."

He was so proud that he was smart enough to figure it out:)

Just Jack...Catching Up!

Our little man has been rather busy...it's hard to keep up with him, but I don't want to forget these sweet moments - even if they happened awhile ago.  Thanks for following along!

*****

Jack refers to an art project as an "artject".  I know.  It seriously doesn't get any cuter than that!

*****

The last time we went to Sport Bounce (an indoor inflatable park), Jack packed his back pack of toys while I was in the shower so that he'd be ready to go as soon as I was ready.  Even though we don't take toys into Sport Bounce because you're too busy bouncing!

Then, as I was packing our little lovelies into the car, Hannah was fussing a bit.  She doesn't love to be strapped into her car seat, but once she's in, she's good.  While she was fussing, Jack tried to calm her down by saying, "It's okay, Hannah Bear.  Sport Bounce is a fun place.  It's inside, not outside."  I think he thought she was sad since it was drizzling outside:)

*****

Sometimes Jack is really great about sitting close to Hannah while she's playing on the floor.  One afternoon, he left the room to go potty or get a snack, and his little sister started to cry.  Jack came running back into the room, "Oh, I'm sorry Hannah.  I didn't mean to leave you alone.  I'm right here."

My heart just melted.  He's so good to her...we are so lucky!

*****

One day we got home from school, and there was a newspaper on the driveway.  Jack jumped down from his car seat and shouted, "I'll get the mail!  I got the mail for you Mama because I'm a cool guy!"  I think he got the phrase "cool guy" from his BFF, Channing.  Channing usually says "funny guy," but I think Jack was just changing it up a bit.  Cute.

*****

After dinner, Jack asked for milk to go with his cookies.  We told him that he already had milk in his cup, and without missing a beat, he replied, "But that's dinner milk.  I need dessert milk."  What?  Where did that come from?

*****

One morning, we were getting dressed for school, and I told Jack he couldn't (again) where his pajamas underneath his school clothes.  He was a little sad, but he calmed himself down by rationalizing to himself.

"Everyone knows I'm spectacular spiderman."

Yes, Baby.  I'm pretty sure that no one's missed that.

*****

Coming back to the idea that Baby Jack is the best big brother EVER...

I had to make a bottle for our fussy baby girl one night and instead of taking her back downstairs with me, I just simply asked Jack to "read her some books" while I went to make the bottle.  I got down some baby board books from Hannah Bear's bookshelf, and left the room.  I guess I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I want Jack to feel like a reader from the start, and so I just set it up that way.

And guess what?  He does feel like a reader.  Because do you know what he did?  He opened up those books, and he read them to her, one after the other, until I came back upstairs.  I heard him from the kitchen and nearly cried.  I was so proud:)

*****

Just this morning, Jack wanted to go crawl into Hannah's crib with her once he saw she was awake on the monitor.  So off he went while I finished getting ready for work.  The next thing I knew, I could see him crawling into her crib, and her ear to ear smile at his presence.  I realized I could talk to him through the monitor, so I just pushed the little button and told him to be careful.

He knows I can see him on the monitor (since we were just watching Hannah together), so the next thing I know, I'm looking at Jack's little nose and cheeks and lips as he gets closer and closer to the camera.  And then he says, "Mommy, I can smell Hannah's poopy diaper."

I just had to laugh.  He's too adorable not to:)

Just Jack

It's been too long since my last Just Jack post, and as usual, our sweet Baby Jack has been talking up a storm.  We've noticed lately that he seems much more expressive - his sentences are streaming together, with lots of details and sometimes, lots of sassiness.  I wonder where he gets that from?  Here's just a sample of what this adorable 3 1/2 year old has been saying:

This morning Jack was telling Daddy and I about how when Hannah gets a little bit older, she will be able to play with him, and he actually said, "Yeah, when Hannah gets big like me, we will play all day long."  It was so stinkin' cute, and Daddy and I just looked at each other and reveled in his adorableness.

*****

Perhaps you remember our Smurf story.  Well, a couple of weeks ago when we set up the Christmas tree, we had to move the toy corner in our family room from one corner to the other.  The poor Smurfs did not make the move without falling off of the shelf, but I promise you, I tried.  When I set everything up, I attempted to put the Smurfs in "the right order," but clearly I failed because Jack deemed me "the wrong order guyer."  Yep, that's me.

*****

One chilly Saturday, Jack announced that he wanted to go outside to play.  When I told him that it was too cold and that we were going to stay in, he responded with a taste of my own medicine.

"We can go outside or we can stay inside.  Hmm...you didn't make a choice, so I made the choice for you.  We're going outside."  And then he walked off, shrugging his shoulders, making a sad face, and saying, "Sorry."

*****

One of my favorite things is when Jack wakes up and comes to snuggle with me in our bed.  Occasionally he wakes up sad or he can't find the toy he took to bed the night before, and he comes in crying and whining - not a great way to wake up, I assure you.  The other night, Jack took a tiny Spiderman guy with him to bed.  The following morning I was already in the shower when he woke up, but he came into the bathroom with a big smile on his face, exclaiming, "Look, Mama!  I took my time!  I looked in my bed and I found him all by myself!"  He was so proud of himself...it absolutely made my day.

*****

Tonight as I was feeding Hannah her bedtime bottle and Jack was playing with his sea life creatures in the bathtub across the hall, I heard our little man call out to his Daddy, "But Daddy, what does an octopus eat?"  I smiled at the adorable thought that our little man gravitates towards all things animal - just like his daddy!

We love him so very much!

Just Jack

Oh, our sweet Baby Jack.  He really is such a nice boy.  Very busy, very talkative.  Still makes us laugh every day.  It's amazing to see him make connections and pull things together as he gets older and older.  I can't believe he's going to be three and a half years old at the end of this month.

Here's what he's been up to lately:

We told Jack that if he behaved really well for Ryan's wedding, we'd get him a Batman toy that he'd been asking us about.  While at the Outer Banks, we traveled to the local Wal-Mart one night to get said toy.  Thank goodness, they had one left.  It would have been a rough night if they hadn't.  On the way back to our hotel, we were talking about what a lucky boy Jack was that they had one left just for him.  After thinking about it for a few seconds, he said, "So if someone else goes to get a Batman toy, they'll be so sad.  They'll have to get it online."

*****

The other day, Jack's teacher told me that Jack had a rough day at school.  During circle time, he got really upset and was crying, but she couldn't get him to tell her why he was so upset.  When I asked him about it at bedtime, he told me he didn't want to go to the treasure box.  Apparently, Jack answered a question, and the teacher told him "to go to the treasure box," which must have sounded a little like, "go to timeout" for our little man because he thought the treasure box was a bad thing!  Poor guy:(  We talked about how the treasure box is a good thing and that the teacher wanted to give him a prize.  The next day, he came home with a little, rubber lizard:)

*****

On the way to swimming last week, Jack was looking out the car window at the moon when he announced that he wanted to go there and go fishing.  When I asked him why he wanted to go fishing on the moon and where he got an idea like that, he said, "I want to go fishing like the little man on the moon."

Me: What little man on the moon?

Jack: You know, the little man that goes fishing on the moon?

Then it dawned on me.  Baby Jack was talking about the Dreamworks logo that he's seen on his movies.  And he came up with that all on his own.

*****

Jack is learning his letters!  So far here's what we're working on:

J is for...Jack
M is for...Mommy
X is for...X marks the spot
O is for...Octopus
S is for...Spectacular Spiderman
D is for...Daddy
H is for...Hannah
G is for...Giraffe and G is for...Gorilla (which he pronounces Bagrilla)

*****

Jack is adjusting to my back to work schedule (more on that later), so instead of us having snuggle time every morning, we can only snuggle on the weekends because during the week, I'm already finished getting cleaned up when I have to wake Jack up.  The first morning I had to wake him up, he pulled the blankets up close to his chin and mumbled, "Goodnight, Mama."  When I told him it was time to get up, he said, "No, not yet," just like what I'd expect from a teenage boy.

*****

Last Saturday when he came in to wake me up, he was all smiles and declared, "Mama, I took a good nap."  Probably because we always ask if he slept well whenever he wakes up:)

*****

Whenever Jack wants us to do something for him, he tries to make it sound like it's something we want to do for ourselves.  For example, if he wants some orange juice, he might say, "Mama, can you get me some orange juice?  You can do that if you want to."  Why, thank you, Baby Jack.

*****

Can you guess where Jack gets this from?

*****
Just this week, Jack commented on the fact that some of our neighbors have Christmas lights up already.  "Are you kidding me?" he said.  I laughed out loud.  Clearly, he's heard someone else say this.  He still occasionally asks me, "Is that serious?" if he doesn't quite think things are as they should be.  I've even gotten, "Is that weird?"

*****

Jack doesn't really like sweets, although he keeps trying different kinds.  After Halloween, he tried a Tootsie Pop which he really liked until he came to the chocolate center.  Then he spit it out and announced that he didn't like it.  After that, he decided to try Dots.  But here's what he had to say about those:

"That doesn't feel good, Mama."

No son, it doesn't feel good to have extra chewy candy stuck in your teeth.  I know exactly what you mean.

But the third times a charm because then he tried a Jolly Rancher fruit chew and quickly announced, "Oh, those are my favorite."

Too funny!

*****

One night before bed I was snuggling Jack when I asked, "Who loves you more than anyone else in the world?" expecting him to say me and Daddy.

Without missing a beat, Jack responds, "Grandma and Grandpa."

I didn't pout, although I wanted to; I just quickly said, "Yes, you're right, Grandma and Grandpa love you more than anyone else and so do Mommy and Daddy."

Brad and I just communicated via facial expressions over his tiny little head.  You just have to laugh!

*****

On the way to school one morning, Jack said, "I don't like it when you work, Mama.  I like it when you stay home."  Broke this Mama's heart:(

*****

One night, while I was cooking dinner, Jack came into the kitchen and announced there was a snake on him.  After trying to contain a freak out session, I said, "Don't be silly, there's not a snake on you."

But then he corrected me and said, "No Mama, there's a snake in my body."

"What?!?!"

It was then that Jack turned around, backed up to me, and said, "See, feel," and put his little paw on his spine:)

We had a little chat about bones, and then for the rest of the evening, he pointed out all of his other bones that he could find.

*****

On the way to the beach, we had to go through a fairly long tunnel under a body of water.  About halfway through the tunnel, we hear from the backseat, "This is like the way to Bruce Wayne's house!"

You know.  Bruce Wayne.  Batman.  The Bat Cave.  Yeah, that house.

*****

Here's what was written on Jack's progress sheet a couple of weeks ago:

Jack is progressing with his cutting and tracing skills.  He understood the "signs of fall" concept of how leaves change colors and fall off the trees.  Jack continues to work on his art projects without becoming upset if things are not perfect.  We talked about how all art creations are different.

Uh oh.  Clearly, he's gotten some of our perfectionist ways.  This is something we're going to have to work on!  Any ideas?

*****

And that, my friends, is what our sweet, little boy has been up.  And those are just the things I can remember:)

Just Jack

I am so blessed to have a little boy who makes me smile my biggest smile EVERY SINGLE DAY.  I love that his vocabulary just continues to explode and that his inflection mimics that of a teenage boy.  I especially love that sometimes he remembers that he's only three and calls me "Mama," instead of Mommy or Mom.  Please, please, please don't ever let that go away for good...

Here's some of what he's been up to:

Last night while feeding his fish with his Daddy, he randomly says, "Daddy, do you know how much I love my fish tank?  (Pauses to allow Daddy to think)  I love it the mostest."

*****

The other night, at dinner time, Jack was unhappy with the way I served his noodles (apparently when he said he wanted meatballs with noodles for dinner and I assumed that meant sauce too, I was wrong).  As he came up close to the table and took a peek, he said, "MooooOM (imagine the way you would've said mom when you were 13 and upset - it was JUST like that), I told you I wanted regular noodles and meatballs.  Not sauce noodles."  And then he grunted in disdain.

Now, I will have you know, that I absolutely spoke to him about his tone and also made him eat his dinner the way it had been served.  And he actually liked it.  You should be so proud...of both of us really.  But later, after Jack had gone to bed, I absolutely told my parenting success story to my hubby, who laughed at me for calling it a parenting success.  Brad said, yes, he may have eaten the dinner; however a) you bought the noodles he demanded rather than the ones you usually buy and b) you asked Jack what he wanted for dinner instead of just telling him what was for dinner.

Baby steps, my friends.  Baby steps.

*****

Awhile ago when I brought up some baby toys for Hannah, Jack reclaimed a toy rattle in the shape of a phone.  That night while Brad and I watched the news and Jack was playing with his toys, we overhead this one-sided conversation:

Hi Grammy.

How are you doing?  I'm doing good.

Oh, that's extristing (interesting).

(Jack hangs up the phone, turns to us, and explains what was so "extristing")

She has a problem, she has bad luck.

She spilled a pot of cheese.

*****

If Jack doesn't like something, he'll explain, "But that's not my favorite.  I don't love that, Mama."  It threw me for awhile as to where that came from, but when I was telling Aunt Kimmee, she told me I say that all the time.  She even did a little Erika-imitation, "Oh, I definitely don't love that."  Hmm...perhaps he did get it from me.

*****

Last night, I was nursing Hannah as we put Jack to bed.  We had already turned the lights out and Hannah was done eating, but as I got up to leave, she spit up a little.  I must've said something like uh oh, the baby spit up, and then I started to wipe her (and me) up while double-checking to make sure it hadn't gotten on Jack's bed.  He bolts upright and says, "Seriously, Mama?!"  Ha!  It was a good thing it missed his bed, but Brad and I thought Jack's "seriously" was so cute we laughed.  And then he got his feelings hurt because we were laughing.  We have to be very careful lately because he's definitely been learning about feelings and not hurting people's feelings at school, and he doesn't understand that we're laughing because he's so cute and adorable; he thinks we're laughing at him in a mean-spirited way, and it makes us feel so bad.  Poor little man.

*****

He's just too cute.  How could you resist buying him the noodles he requests?  Seriously.

Just Jack

My little man's been cracking us up, as usual...enjoy these little snippets, why don't you?

*****

While organizing train track pieces with his daddy, Brad informed him that a piece didn't fit with another piece.  Jack's response?

"I submit that it does."

A phrase he learned from his daddy, no doubt.  But we were pretty impressed that he used it correctly:)

*****

Jack and Daddy ran up to Walgreens the other night to pick up a prescription.  On the way home, they were playing a game they call "favorite things."  Apparently, Brad asked Jack what Daddy's favorite things were.  Jack came up with this list:

medicine
food
red lights and green lights

Too funny!

*****

Before heading off to work the other day, Brad asked Jack to "be a good boy for mommy."  As Jack gave kisses and hugs and waved goodbye, he shouted, "Be a good daddy!"

*****

The following is a conversation I observed between Jack and Hannah:

Jack: Hannah, you came out of mommy's belly.  That must've been fun!

Hannah: {crickets}

Jack:  I know...it took a really long time, huh?

Hannah: {crickets}

(He didn't seem to mind her lack of response in the least, thank goodness.)

*****

While clarifying what he wanted for dinner, Jack told me that he wanted "regular noodles.  Not other noodles.  Those are not my favorite.  I just want regular noodles, Mama."  Meaning, buttered noodles instead of noodles with spaghetti sauce.  Got it.  Coming right up!

*****

The other morning, Hannah Bear was a bit fussy, and I must have said something to Jack like, "She did not like that."

He chimed in with, "Not one little bit.  She did not like it, not one little bit."

I knew it came straight from a book I've read to him, but I couldn't place it right then.  I thought I'd ask Jack.

Without even stopping to think about, he replied, "The Cat in the Hat."

Right you were, my smart little man.

*****

Because one day he'll say these words correctly, and I'll want to cry, I'm noting them hear so I can always remember...

mogurt = yogurt
bringrilla = umbrella

Just Jack

I honestly cannot keep up with the adorableness that abounds from Jack each day.  Don't get me wrong - him building independence is still challenging, and we definitely still have our behavior issues, but my goodness - he just says the cutest things.  This might be a long post - I've fallen a few days behind for a couple of super-cute reasons:)

{Yes - they are my reasons}

*****
Belle likes to eat Jack's food, but Gracie prefers Jack's small toys.  The other day, Jack found Gracie happily chewing on a tiny Bullseye toy.  He promptly took care of the situation, directing her to "get in the crate."  When Belle followed Gracie into their crate, he responded with, "Oh, Cuddlebug, you're not in trouble.  I'm sorry - I didn't mean to scare you!"  Belle does not like to be without Gracie, so she wouldn't come out of the crate.  Jack came up to me and said, "Mommy, she won't come out of the crate but she didn't do anything wrong..."

One night before bed, Jack wanted us to call Grandma and Grandpa to ask them to come over the next day.  When we tried to explain that it was late and we'd call in the morning because Grandpa was already sleeping, we could see the wheels begin to turn.  Jack's response: "Well, call Grandma.  She's awake."

At the beginning of last school year, I happened to learn a little bit about an animal I'd never heard of before - an animal called the aye-aye.  Literally, I'd gone 30 years without ever hearing of it.  But my precious three year old can tell you all about the aye-aye, thanks to the nature shows he watches with his daddy.  He'll explain that they take their long finger and stick it in the hole in the tree, and then they eat the bugs all up.  He can even act it out:)

*****
The other night, while taking a shower with Daddy, Jack got water in his eyes.  Which he hates.  A lot.  From the bathroom, I listened to Daddy try to explain that it would be okay.  Then I heard Jack say, "But you don't understand."  My jaw dropped - I seriously thought that was a teenager phrase we wouldn't hear for many years to come, but clearly, no such luck.

*****
Upset that Grandma didn't put his cars in their "proper" racing positions, he told her, "Please don't do that EVER again, Grandma."  (A phrase he's heard us use when trying to keep him safe from physical harm.)

*****
Jack constantly dresses up in his Spiderman pajamas and Spiderman sandals and declares that, "he's actually spectacular Spiderman."  I knew he was a little obsessed - I just didn't realize HOW obsessed until the other night in his sleep, I heard him over the monitor loud and clear.  "Spiderman," he mumbled.  Completely. in. his. sleep.

*****
His newest phrase is, "Mommy/Daddy, I've got a problem for you."  Then he'll proceed to tell you about something or ask something that really isn't a problem at all:)

*****
Jack's sock seams have to be perfect on his feet, or else we have serious problems for the day.  One morning after trying several times and becoming more and more frustrated, he told me that they were "tricky socks" and asked for help.

Last night while the four of us were snuggling in Jack's bed at bedtime, I had Hannah on Jack's chest to say good night.  She was a little fussy because she wanted to eat, and when she cried out, her adorable big brother assured her, "I know Hannah...I have to go to sleep too."  Clearly, he thought she was rather sad about having to get ready for bed.  How sweet is that?

Then, just this morning, Hannah was in the swing.  When she started to stir and make a little noise, I watched Jack rush over and try to soothe her.  He fixed her blanket, and whispered to her, "It's okay, Hannah.  You're alright.  I'm right here."  Man, I love that boy!

One of Jack's toys broke the other day, and unfortunately, it's not one that can be fixed.  When we both tried to explain that it couldn't be fixed and Daddy made a sad face and said that he was sorry about the toy being broken, Jack wasn't ready to give up.  As he walked away with the broken parts, he said, "Maybe some glue will fix it," like it hadn't already occurred to us had that been a viable option:)  Super-cute, but also broke my heart a little bit.  I hate to see him disappointed.

*****
During a play-day with Daddy, Jack had a plan.  "First we'll take a nap, and then we'll play for two hours and two minutes.  Okay, Daddy?!"  He's nothing if not precise.

*****
Along with "why?" Jack also asks lots of other questions, like, "Wasn't that gross?  Isn't that serious?  Isn't that silly?"

*****
"Let's kiss!" Jack exclaimed to me after I'd asked him for kisses and he was too busy playing.  A few minutes later, he came up to me, determined to get some love:)  And that he did.

Last Thursday, this is the precious message I got on Jack's daily sheet from school:
Our Jack is growing up to be such a sweet young man.  Today he helped his young friends sing the lunch time song as well as the steps that go with it.  Jack always puts a smile on everyone!

This mama's heart just beamed, I can't even tell you.
